Admission Criteria

The College of Dentistry evaluates the following items when determining an applicant's admissibility:

  • Academic performance: applicants should have an overall GPA of "B" or better (recent entering class had 3.6 overall GPA; 3.5 Science GPA)
  • Bachelor's Degree, prior to admission is preferred; however, an applicant must complete a minimum of 90 quarter hours (60 semester hours) at an accredited four-year college or university. Specific undergraduate major that focuses on a strong science core such as biology or chemistry is beneficial.
  • Specific prerequisite courses must be completed with a grade of "C" or better prior to applying. Click on the following link for a listing of these required prerequisites: http://dent.osu.edu/admissions/course_requirements.php.
  • Dental Admission Test (DAT) score of 19 or better. Effective January 2007, applicants who have taken the DAT exam three or more times must apply for special permission to take the test again.
  • Two letters of recommendation submitted as part of the AADSAS application; one should be from a college science professor - someone who has worked closely with you and is able to write about your academic qualities; and one should be from someone who knows you very well - someone who has first-hand knowledge of your personal qualities and characteristics such as dentists observed or employers. Additional letters from congressmen, senators, governors, mayors, alumni or members of the clergy are not helpful.
  • Observation hours - minimum of 20 hours of observation in a dental office
  • Community service - specific information is available at the following link: http://dent.osu.edu/admissions/service_requirements.php.
  • Interview
