Applications for the Autumn 2011 MD Program will be available through AMCAS on or about June 1.

DEADLINES

AMCAS applications will be accepted starting June 1 until November 1 of the year prior to anticipated matriculation. No applications are accepted by AMCAS after November 1.

If you designate Ohio State on the electronic AMCAS application, you will receive an email from the College of Medicine directing you to the web-based secondary application.

ADMISSION CRITERIA

The College of Medicine Admissions committee will evaluate you using competitive admission standards. Along with a strong academic performance, the college looks for you to be self-motivated and compassionate, with strong integrity and interpersonal skills to match the intellectual, physical, and emotional capacities needed to master the medical curriculum. Diverse interests and backgrounds are helpful in establishing a balanced view of society necessary for success in medical practice.

• Strong academic performance; the academic profile of candidates admitted in 2009 include a 3.72 cumulative grade-point average.
• Completion of an undergraduate degree; no specific undergraduate curriculum or college major is required; however, students should choose a major field for which they have enthusiasm and interest.
• Specific prerequisite courses are required and should be completed at a fully accredited four-year institution. The following courses should each be a full academic year or equivalent sequence:
  • General chemistry with quantitative and qualitative analysis
  • Organic chemistry with laboratory
  • Physics with laboratory
  • Biology
  In addition, course work in biochemistry or cellular and molecular biology is strongly recommended.
• MCAT score; all applicants are required to take the MCAT within three years of their application. The average MCAT composite for the 2009 entering class was 33+P.
• Clinical experiences that include patient contact and physician shadowing
• Research experience
• Community service and leadership activities
• Two letters of recommendation from professors who taught you and assigned a grade for credit in a course, and additional personal letters from individuals outside the classroom setting who know you well and can comment on community or volunteer service, clinical exposure, and research experience.
• Interviewers will explore the candidate's motivation for seeking a medical degree, understanding of the medical profession, problem solving skills, understanding of medical ethics, and interpersonal skills.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENT

Applicants are required to demonstrate spoken, auditory, reading, and writing proficiency in the English language. Applicants who indicate that English is their second language or have been recommended for assessment after interview by the Admissions Committee may have their admission decision delayed pending review of scores from the Test of Spoken English (TSE), the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), or a SPEAK test (the Ohio State institutional equivalent of the TSE).

MEDICAL ADMISSIONS PATHWAY

The Medical Admissions Pathway (MAP) provides conditional acceptance into the College of Medicine after four years of undergraduate study for students accepted into Honors who have checked the "pre-med" box on their freshman application entering The Ohio State University in Autumn Quarter.

• The Medical Admissions Pathway on-line application can be accessed through the
  Medical Admissions Pathway website. (It is not available in any other form).
• A freshman application must also be submitted for general admission to The Ohio State University.
• Deadline to submit the MAP application is March 1.
