The College of Veterinary Medicine uses selective admission procedures. Criteria for admission are determined by an Admissions Committee. Applicants are evaluated on academic profiles and certain non-cognitive factors including motivation, character, communication and interpersonal skills, personality, leadership ability, animal exposure, and knowledge of the profession. Please see criteria list below, however, specific requirements may change annually. It is the candidate's responsibility to know and comply with the correct procedures and guidelines for admission.
- Successful completion of required prerequisite courses with a C or better*
- Grade-point average**
- Minimum GRE of 1000 (verbal, quantitative, and analytical sections combined) or minimum MCAT of 24, O-T
- Three personal references (two must be from veterinarians)
- Minimum of 80 hours of work experience with one veterinarian
*Prerequisite Courses
The College of Veterinary Medicine does not recommend any specific pre-professional or undergraduate degree program. Although a bachelor's degree is not a prerequisite for admission, prospective applicants are encouraged to enroll in degree programs of their choosing while taking the required pre-veterinary courses or their equivalents. Click on the following link to view the required prerequisite courses: http://www.vet.ohio-state.edu/2537.htm.
**Grade-Point Average
The grade-point average (GPA) for admission is not absolute; however, Ohio and West Virginia residents with a 3.00 average or above (4.00=A), and non-Ohio residents with a 3.40 average or above will be given preferential consideration by the Admissions Committee. Applicants with a GPA less than 2.8 will not be considered at all.
The average GPA for the 2008 entering class was 3.6 and the average GRE score was 1229.
**Interview
The Admissions Committee will schedule interviews with selected applicants. A consultation for unsuccessful candidates is encouraged and is available by contacting the Office of Student Affairs.
