Admissions

If I want to take courses through the Academy, do I need to meet all the admissions requirements?

The Academy Program is available to students who have had the highest level of success in high school. Therefore, students must meet the high school class rank or grade point requirement, as well as the ACT or SAT score requirements.

Can I be admitted if I haven't taken a standardized test (ACT or SAT) yet?

We do require an ACT or SAT score before a student can be admitted to the Academy program. If you have not taken the ACT or SAT, we will accept the PSAT or PLAN tests.

Will you accept other tests scores if I don't have an ACT or SAT, such as an Iowa Basic Test?

We only accept the standardized test scores that apply to college admissions - specifically, the ACT, SAT, PSAT or PLAN.

Are the requirements for admission the same if I want to do the Academy Program at a regional campus?

Admission requirements to the Academy are the same for Columbus and the Regional campuses. All students, regardless of campus of enrollment, must meet the admissions requirements.


Am I guaranteed admission to Ohio State after I graduate from high school if I am admitted to the Academy?

Admission to the Academy does not guarantee admission to Ohio State after high school graduation. You must still submit an application for admission if you would like to attend Ohio State after graduating from high school.


Home School Students

Can students who are homeschooled participate in the Academy?

State Legislation does not permit homeschool students to participate in the Post Secondary Enrollment Option Program Option B. Option B is the option to receive both high school and college credit, at the expense of the local school district.

Ohio State will allow home school students to participate through Option A, receiving college credit. Option A requires the family to pay the costs of participating in the program.

Will my local school district pay for my homestudent to participate in the Academy?

You should check with your local school district to learn about their policies for homeschool students.

Can I participate if I go to an independent high school or a charter school?

Students who are enrolled in private high schools, independent high schools, and charter high schools are able to participate in Post Secondary Enrollment Options Program Option B. See your high school counselor or school administrator to start the process.

Do I need transcripts if I am a home school student?

Yes, all students need to submit a transcript that lists the courses taken and the grades and credit received for each course.

Course Scheduling

Can I take any course that Ohio State offers through the Academy?

You need to have coursework completed in the subject area before you can take courses in that subject through the Academy.

English 4 units of college prep English
Math the highest level of math that is available in your high school
Natural Science 2 units of science with a lab
Social Science 2 units of social science
Foreign language 2 units of foreign language (can be different than the language you wish to take through the academy)
Visual or Performing Arts 1 unit of visual or performing art

One unit = Carnegie Unit/ year-long course in high school

You also need to meet course pre-requisites, e.g. math placement scores for a math or science course.

Am I guaranteed the course that I want to take if I am admitted to the Academy?

Academy students are not guaranteed enrollment in a specific course. Course enrollment will be based on several factors:

  • Is the course offered this quarter?
  • Is the course offered at a time that fits your schedule?
  • Are there open seats in the class when you register?
  • Is the class restricted to students in a particular major?

How do I know what classes are offered at Ohio State?

Look in the Course Offerings Bulletin at:

How do I know if the class I want is offered the quarter I would like to enroll?

Look in the Master Schedule of Courses:
buckeyelink.osu.edu/masterschedule/msched.aspx
Note : The master schedule does not show future quarter classes. You can look at a past quarters' schedules to see what classes have been offered in the past.

Do I have to take courses every quarter?

The Academy program is voluntary, so you can take courses when it is convenient for you. You can take a quarter off, take classes for just one quarter, etc.

Can I take online courses?

Academy students can take courses online. This link has information about the on-line courses that are available at Ohio State: telr.osu.edu/elearning

Do I have to start autumn quarter?

No, you can start any quarter.


High School Information

How will my high school grade point average be affected by taking classes through the Academy program?

Check with your high school counselor or principal.

Can I take classes in the Academy to meet my high school graduation requirements?

General Questions

Are there any fees that Academy Option B students pay?

There are several fees you will need to pay.

  • Application Fee - $40
  • COTA fee - $9 per quarter
  • Parking Permit - approximately $65 per year
  • Health Insurance - Students who enroll in 6 or more credit hours are required to purchase student health insurance or provide proof that they have coverage through another insurance policy.

Are books covered through Option B?

You will receive your books free of charge. We do require that you return the books at the end of the quarter.

Can I take free classes through Option B in the summer?

No, Option B is not available during summer quarter.

Can I live on campus as an Academy Student?

No. Academy students must commute from the home of a parent or legal guardian.

How will the classes I take through the Academy transfer?

This will be determined by the college you plan to attend after high school. You can find transfer information for many Ohio schools at www.transfer.org

Does my Academy GPA stay with me if I go to a different school?

This may depend on the college you attend after high school, but generally your grades do not transfer.

Does my Academy GPA stay with me if I attend Ohio State?

Yes, this is the beginning of your Ohio State grade point average and transcript.

I'm doing Post Secondary through another college - will my credit transfer to Ohio State?

It's very possible that your credit will transfer to Ohio State. Check out www.transfer.org for more information.

Can I get football tickets? Can I participate in clubs or intramural sports?

You are not eligible to purchase football tickets. You also are not eligible to pledge a fraternity or sorority. You can participate in other on-campus activities.

Can I use special services at Ohio State?

You can use the services that are available to students at Ohio State, including:

Can I use the recreation facilities at Ohio State?

The recreation facilities at Ohio State charge a fee for use. You will need to pay the recreation fee before you can use the facilities.
